Claude Without a US Credit Card: A Developer Quick Start

गाइड · EN · 2026-10-29

Start with the right kind of Claude access

If you want Claude in an application, terminal workflow, or development tool, you need API access—not necessarily a Claude chat subscription. These are separate products with separate billing. A relay API key also does not unlock a paid plan on Claude’s consumer website.

A US credit card is not a universal requirement for Claude access. Your options depend on your country, the provider’s supported regions, and its currently accepted payment methods. Start by checking direct access; if billing is the obstacle, evaluate a relay that can serve your location and accept your payment method.

1. Check payment eligibility before writing code

For direct access, review Anthropic’s current country availability and billing requirements. Do not assume a locally issued card will fail simply because it is not American. Equally, do not assume every international card is accepted.

If direct billing does not work for you, check 59API’s payment options before depositing funds. 59API is an AI API relay offering low-cost, pay-as-you-go access to Claude and other model families through one account.

Do not assume that a relay supports bank transfers, cryptocurrency, or a particular local wallet unless its current checkout confirms this. Avoid fake billing addresses or attempts to bypass regional restrictions.

2. Create an account and start with a small balance

Once you have confirmed payment compatibility, create a 59API account, add the smallest practical balance, and generate an API key. Keep that key server-side; never embed it in browser JavaScript, a mobile application bundle, or a public repository.

The pay-as-you-go setup is useful for developers who need occasional coding help or want to test an integration without committing to another subscription. Compare actual input and output token rates rather than headline discounts alone. If you plan to use prompt caching or long contexts, check how those are billed too.

59API offers a referral rebate. Review its current eligibility and payout terms, but treat it as a bonus rather than part of your baseline cost estimate.

3. Copy the model ID and configure your SDK

Choose a model such as Claude Haiku 4.5 or Claude Sonnet 5.5, then copy its exact API identifier from the dashboard. A display name is not necessarily the string an endpoint expects.

59API’s API base address is https://api.59api.com. For an OpenAI-compatible client, copy the documented SDK base URL, including any required version suffix. Do not guess whether a path such as /v1 is required.

Install the Python SDK with: pip install openai

Configure three environment variables through your development environment or secret manager: OPENAI_API_KEY for your 59API key, OPENAI_BASE_URL for the documented compatibility endpoint, and CLAUDE_MODEL_ID for the copied model identifier.

Run this one-line smoke test:

python -c 'import os; from openai import OpenAI; client = OpenAI(base_url=os.environ["OPENAI_BASE_URL"]); result = client.chat.completions.create(model=os.environ["CLAUDE_MODEL_ID"], messages=[{"role":"user","content":"Reply with: connection successful"}], max_tokens=32); print(result.choices[0].message.content)'

4. Verify billing and connect your development tools

After the request succeeds, inspect the usage dashboard. Confirm the requested model, recorded token usage, and balance change before sending larger workloads.

59API supports Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, and OpenAI SDK integrations. Use its tool-specific setup instructions: an OpenAI-compatible request succeeding does not mean every CLI uses the same environment variables, authentication headers, or endpoint paths.

If a request fails, check the HTTP status and response body first. Authentication errors usually point to credentials; model errors suggest an identifier or availability issue; rate-limit responses require backoff rather than repeated immediate retries.

5. Keep the low-cost setup safe

Set spending limits or alerts where available, cap output length, and test with non-sensitive prompts. A relay sits between your application and the upstream provider, so review logging, retention, and data-handling policies before sending customer information.

If its payment options fit your location, consider signing up for 59API and testing one small request. That gives you a practical check of payment compatibility, response quality, and real cost before you commit more budget.
