Claude Haiku vs Sonnet vs Opus: Route Smarter

Modèles · EN · 2026-10-27

The quick answer: start with Sonnet, then specialize

Choosing between Claude Haiku, Sonnet, and Opus is less about finding one universal winner and more about matching model capability to the cost of a mistake. For a new application, start with Sonnet as your baseline, test whether Haiku can handle simpler requests, and reserve Opus for work where additional reasoning is worth the expense.

Treat these as starting hypotheses, not guaranteed rankings. Actual quality, latency, and cost depend on the specific version, prompt, workload, and API route.

1. Match the tier to the job

For example, extracting an invoice number rarely needs the same model as diagnosing a production race condition. Separate those paths before optimizing prompts.

2. Run a small evaluation before committing

Collect 30 representative requests: 10 easy, 10 typical, and 10 difficult. Remove secrets and personal data. Include malformed inputs, missing context, and requests your application should reject or clarify.

Choose the cheapest option that meets your quality threshold. Thirty cases provide a screening test, not statistical certainty; validate the winner on a larger sample before production.

3. Measure cost per successful task

Token prices alone can mislead. A cheaper model that needs three attempts may cost more than a stronger model that succeeds immediately. Long outputs and repeated conversation history also inflate spending.

Use this calculation: total evaluation spend divided by the number of tasks that pass your acceptance checks. Compare latency alongside it. For interactive applications, measure both median and p95 latency, because occasional slow responses can dominate the user experience.

Check current pricing, context limits, output limits, and feature support for the exact model you select. Family names do not guarantee identical capabilities across versions.

4. Add routing without creating a retry loop

Begin with explicit rules. Send predictable extraction requests to Haiku, general development work to Sonnet, and pre-identified difficult cases to Opus. If a response fails validation, allow one escalation with the original task and a concise explanation of the failure.

Prefer external signals such as schema validation, failed tests, or missing required evidence. A model saying it feels confident is not a reliable quality gate. Set a maximum attempt count and spending budget, then ask for clarification or hand off when necessary.

5. Use 59API to compare and control spending

59API offers low-cost, pay-as-you-go access to native, official-quality models without downgrades. Its multi-provider catalog makes it convenient to compare Claude tiers and alternatives without maintaining separate billing relationships.

The API base URL is https://api.59api.com. Copy the exact model identifier from 59API rather than deriving it from a display name. For OpenAI SDK integrations, follow its endpoint and authentication configuration instructions; Claude Code, Codex, and Gemini CLI are also supported.

Keep credentials in environment variables and verify endpoint compatibility before sending production traffic. If you want to run a small comparison without a large commitment, consider signing up for 59API and setting a modest test budget.
