Claude Code vs Cursor vs Windsurf: A 20-Minute Start
Choose the workflow before the model
Claude Code, Cursor and Windsurf can all help you understand repositories, change files and troubleshoot failures. The practical difference is where you work: Claude Code centers on an agentic terminal workflow, while Cursor and Windsurf build AI assistance into a graphical editor. For a busy developer, the right choice is the one that shortens your edit-test-review loop without making changes harder to inspect.
This quick-start guide gives you a realistic comparison and a 20-minute trial. Judge the tools on your repository, not on a polished demo.
Claude Code vs Cursor vs Windsurf at a glance
- Claude Code: Start here if you prefer terminals, scripts and explicit task delegation. It can inspect a project, edit files and run commands with permissions. Editor integrations are available, but inline autocomplete is not its main attraction.
- Cursor: Start here if you want an editor-first workflow with inline suggestions, conversational assistance and an agent. It suits developers who frequently move between writing individual lines and delegating larger changes.
- Windsurf: Start here if you want an AI-focused editor with an integrated agent, Cascade. Its appeal is keeping repository exploration, edits and follow-up work within the editor.
No universal winner: Completion quality, agent behavior and cost depend on the selected model, available context, settings and task. Do not assume a subscription, API key or advertised model unlocks every feature.
Minutes 0–5: Prepare a safe test
Choose a small repository with a working test command. Create a branch using git switch -c ai-tool-trial, confirm the existing tests pass and note any pre-existing failures. Pick a contained task: add input validation to one endpoint and cover it with tests.
Give each tool the same brief: “Find the endpoint and its existing tests. Propose a minimal plan, add validation without changing successful responses, add regression tests, then run the relevant tests. Ask before adding dependencies.” Use separate branches or worktrees so one tool cannot inherit another tool’s solution.
Minutes 5–10: Connect your preferred workflow
- Claude Code: Install it using the official instructions, then open a terminal in the repository. For a 59API connection, set ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL to https://api.59api.com and ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN to your relay key in that terminal session. Confirm the supported authentication settings in 59API’s Claude Code instructions, then launch claude. Use the exact model ID supplied by the relay rather than guessing one from a display name.
- Cursor: Open the project, check indexing status and exclusions, and select an available model. If using your own API key, verify which features support it and whether your installed version accepts the required custom endpoint. A working chat connection does not establish agent or autocomplete compatibility.
- Windsurf: Open the project and start a Cascade conversation. Check current provider and bring-your-own-key options before purchasing API credit specifically for Windsurf. Do not assume that OpenAI-compatible API access works across every editor feature.
Minutes 10–20: Run, inspect and score
Submit the task, review the proposed approach and approve only necessary commands. Inspect the resulting patch with git diff --stat and git diff. Run tests yourself, even if the agent reports success.
- Correctness: Does validation reject invalid input while preserving valid requests?
- Scope: Did it avoid unrelated refactors and unnecessary dependencies?
- Effort: How many corrections, approvals and manual repairs were needed?
- Cost: Record elapsed time, API spend and any subscription or premium-usage charges.
Keep model access affordable with 59API
59API offers low-cost, pay-as-you-go access across providers, including Claude Sonnet 5.5 and Gemini 3.1 Pro. It supports Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI and OpenAI SDK clients. Its offering emphasizes native, official-quality models without downgrades; confirm current model IDs, rates and limits before integrating.
API access does not automatically replace an editor subscription. For compatible workflows, keep costs predictable with narrow task scopes, spending limits and usage tracking. If flexible model access suits your workflow, consider signing up for 59API; a referral rebate is also available.
Make the final choice
Choose Claude Code for terminal-centered delegation, Cursor for frequent inline coding assistance, or Windsurf for an integrated Cascade workflow. Start with conservative permissions and review every patch. Before sending proprietary code through any relay, check your organization’s policies and the provider’s retention terms.
