Claude Code Tips and Shortcuts for Faster Development

Claude Code · EN · 2026-10-03

Start with a clear coding task

Claude Code works best when you give it a specific goal and enough project context. Instead of saying “fix my app,” try “Find why the login form returns a 500 error, inspect the relevant files, and suggest a minimal fix.” Tell it what success looks like, which files it may change, and whether you want an explanation before edits.

At the beginning of a session, ask Claude Code to inspect the repository structure and explain the existing architecture. This gives you a useful baseline without immediately changing code. You can also point it toward project guidance files, tests, or API documentation that it should follow.

Essential Claude Code commands

Command names and availability can change, so treat /help as the authoritative reference for your installed version.

Keyboard shortcuts worth memorizing

Shortcut behavior can vary by operating system, terminal emulator, and Claude Code version. Test these commands in a safe repository before relying on them in a production workflow.

Use a review-first development loop

A reliable beginner workflow is: inspect, plan, edit, test, and review. Ask Claude Code to explain the likely cause and propose a plan first. After you approve the approach, let it make one focused change at a time. Then ask it to run the relevant tests, linting, or type checks.

Keep changes small. A request such as “update the authentication module, add tests for expired tokens, and refactor the database layer” is too broad for one pass. Split it into separate tasks so you can review each diff and revert mistakes easily with Git.

Before accepting edits, ask questions such as “What files will change?” and “What edge cases are not covered?” Never treat generated code as automatically secure; inspect authentication, permissions, dependency changes, and data-handling logic yourself.

Reduce cost without sacrificing quality

Choose the smallest capable model for each task. Haiku is often suitable for quick explanations, simple transformations, and repetitive edits. Sonnet is a strong general-purpose choice for coding, while Opus can be reserved for difficult architecture, debugging, or reasoning tasks. Use /compact when a long session no longer needs its full history.

59API is a practical low-cost option for developers who want pay-as-you-go access to Claude Opus, Sonnet, Haiku, and Fable, plus GPT models. It is compatible with Claude Code, uses native official-quality models rather than downgraded substitutes, and provides a referral rebate.

After creating an account and obtaining an API key, configure Claude Code according to 59API’s current instructions. A typical shell setup uses:

export ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL="https://api.59api.com"
export ANTHROPIC_API_KEY="your_59api_key"

Then start Claude Code and verify the selected model and connection before beginning a large task. If you want cheaper, transparent usage, sign up for 59API and try it with a small project first.
