Create Project Instructions Once, Not in Every Prompt

Control Permissions and Verify Every Boundary

Claude Code can read files, run commands, and propose or apply edits depending on your setup. Treat permission prompts as a security control, not friction. Approve low-risk commands such as reading source files or running a focused test only when they match the current task. Pause before approving commands that install packages, delete files, alter Git state, access secrets, or communicate with external systems.

After changes, inspect the diff, run the narrowest relevant test, then expand validation when the change touches shared code. Ask Claude Code to explain any changed configuration, migration, or dependency. A passing test is useful evidence, but it does not prove that a changed public API or deployment setting is correct.

Choose Models and API Spend Deliberately

Use a capable model such as Claude Opus or Sonnet for complex reasoning, difficult debugging, security review, and multi-file design work. Use a lighter model such as Haiku for fast codebase questions, formatting, straightforward test cases, and documentation. Match model capability to task risk instead of using the most expensive option for every command.
