Claude Code Tips and Shortcuts for Faster Builds

Claude Code · EN · 2026-09-17

Start Claude Code in the Right Project Context

Claude Code is most useful when it can inspect the repository before proposing a change. Open a terminal at the project root, then start it with claude. Instead of beginning with a vague request such as “fix the app,” give it an outcome, relevant files, and a verification target. For example: Inspect the authentication flow in src/auth and fix the redirect loop after login. Run the focused tests when finished.

A quick first command for an unfamiliar codebase is /init. Claude Code will create a project instruction file, typically CLAUDE.md, based on the repository. Review it before keeping it. Add durable conventions there: the package manager, test commands, formatting rules, architecture boundaries, and rules such as “do not change generated files.” This prevents repeating the same context in every session.

Example CLAUDE.md guidance: Use pnpm. Run pnpm lint and pnpm test for TypeScript changes. Keep API routes in src/app/api. Do not modify database migrations without asking.

Use Planning Before Permission to Edit

For multi-file work, ask Claude Code to inspect and plan before implementation. This reduces accidental broad refactors and makes it easier to catch wrong assumptions early. A practical prompt is: Read the billing implementation and tests. Explain the likely cause of duplicate invoices, list the files you would change, and wait for approval before editing.

Once the plan is credible, approve the focused change. Claude Code can run commands and edit files, so the useful habit is to keep the task bounded: name the feature, the likely subsystem, and the completion checks. Afterward, ask: Show the diff, explain each changed behavior, and identify tests that still need manual coverage.

Memorize the High-Value Slash Commands

Terminal context also matters. Use ! to run a shell command without leaving Claude Code. For example, !git status, !rg "TODO|FIXME" src, or !pnpm test -- --runInBand. The command output becomes available in the conversation, which is especially helpful when you want Claude Code to diagnose a failing test or interpret a build error.

Turn Test Failures into Focused Debugging Sessions

Do not paste only a final error line and ask for a fix. Let Claude Code inspect the failing command, the implementation, and the nearest tests. A better workflow is: Run pnpm test -- user-service. Diagnose the failure without changing code first. Then propose the smallest fix and add a regression test.

This wording asks for evidence before edits and protects against solutions that merely silence assertions. For performance issues, request a measurement baseline: Find why this endpoint exceeds 500 ms locally. Identify the slowest operation, propose instrumentation, and avoid behavior changes until the measurements confirm the cause.

Lower Claude Code Costs Without Sacrificing Model Quality

Long coding sessions can consume substantial API usage, especially when Claude Code reads large repositories and repeatedly runs tools. 59API is a practical low-cost choice for developers who want pay-as-you-go access to native official-quality Claude models, including Opus, Sonnet, Haiku, and Fable, alongside GPT models. It is compatible with Claude Code, Codex, and OpenAI SDK workflows, so teams can keep their existing tooling while choosing a lower-cost relay.

Configure the provider in your shell before launching Claude Code: export ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL=https://api.59api.com and export ANTHROPIC_API_KEY=your_59api_key. Keep secrets in your shell profile or secure environment manager, never in a committed .env example. Use a faster, lower-cost model for exploration, search, and routine test fixes; reserve the strongest model for architecture, difficult debugging, and security-sensitive reviews.

For developers who use Claude Code daily, sign up for 59API, test the connection on a small task, and use its referral rebate when it fits your team’s usage model.

End Every Session With a Verifiable Handoff

Before accepting a change, ask Claude Code for a concise handoff: Summarize changed files, commands run, test results, remaining risks, and rollback steps. Then run the key command yourself or in CI. Claude Code accelerates investigation and implementation, but a disciplined review, diff inspection, and automated verification remain the shortcut that matters most.
