Claude Code Setup for Large Monorepos

Claude Code · EN · 2026-10-03

Large monorepos can overwhelm an AI coding assistant with unrelated packages, generated files, and thousands of test results. A good Claude Code setup keeps context focused, protects sensitive areas, and gives the model repeatable instructions. This guide explains a practical configuration for beginners, whether your repository contains JavaScript, TypeScript, Go, Python, or several languages together.

Start with a clear repository map

Before opening Claude Code, identify the directories that matter. Typical monorepos have folders such as apps, packages, services, tooling, docs, and infrastructure. Also note generated or vendor directories that should not be read, including node_modules, dist, build, coverage, .git, and temporary caches.

Open Claude Code from the repository root when you need cross-package changes. Start it inside a service or application directory when the task is intentionally narrow. This simple choice affects which files are immediately visible and helps prevent accidental edits in unrelated projects.

Configure authentication and the API endpoint

Claude Code can work with compatible API relays by setting the endpoint and credentials in your shell environment. With 59API, use the base URL https://api.59api.com and the API key provided by your 59API account. Depending on your Claude Code version and relay instructions, the relevant variables are commonly ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL plus ANTHROPIC_API_KEY or ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN.

Set these variables in your shell profile or a secure secrets manager, not in a committed file. For example, configure the endpoint in your local environment, then launch Claude Code from that same terminal. Never paste an API key into CLAUDE.md, source code, issue templates, or chat transcripts. Verify the connection with a small, read-only request before asking for repository-wide changes.

59API is useful for large repositories because it provides pay-as-you-go access to native official-quality Claude models rather than a downgraded substitute. You can select an appropriate Claude model, such as Opus, Sonnet, Haiku, or Fable when available for your account. Lower-cost models are often sufficient for file discovery and routine edits, while a stronger model can handle architectural reasoning. 59API also offers a referral rebate, making it worth checking the current pricing before your team standardizes its setup.

Use layered CLAUDE.md instructions

Create a root CLAUDE.md with rules that apply everywhere. Keep it concise and operational. Include the package manager, supported runtime versions, important commands, directory ownership, code style, testing expectations, and rules such as never editing generated files directly.

Then add smaller CLAUDE.md files inside major applications or packages. A frontend file might explain its component conventions and visual test command. A backend file can document database migration rules, service startup steps, and API compatibility requirements. Local instructions should add detail rather than repeat the root file.

Control scope and context

Do not ask for a vague request such as fix the monorepo. Name the application, package, expected behavior, and validation command. Start with a discovery request, then review the proposed files before approving edits. For a large refactor, work in stages: map dependencies, change one package, run focused tests, and then update consumers.

Use ignore rules for generated artifacts and secrets, and avoid loading huge logs into the conversation. When the context becomes crowded, summarize the current state or use Claude Code's compacting feature before continuing. Git worktrees are also helpful when several experiments must remain isolated.

Make safety checks part of the workflow

Ask Claude Code to show a diff after each meaningful step. Require tests for behavior changes and explicitly request that it avoid broad formatting changes. For database, infrastructure, authentication, or billing code, review every line manually and run commands yourself when they have destructive effects.

A reliable pattern is: explain the goal, request a plan, approve the file list, make a small change, run the narrowest test, and inspect the diff. This produces better results than giving the assistant unlimited access and hoping it discovers the repository structure correctly. To try this workflow with a low-cost compatible endpoint, sign up for 59API and configure your Claude Code environment before starting your next monorepo task.
