Claude Code Review: Myths vs Facts

Claude Code · EN · 2026-09-20

Myth: Claude Code can review an entire repository perfectly

Fact: Claude Code is most reliable when you define a focused review scope. An enormous repository may exceed useful context, hide important dependencies, or encourage vague recommendations. Start from the repository root, inspect the project structure, and ask it to review a specific change such as the current Git diff, a pull request branch, or one module.

A practical prompt is: Review the current Git diff for correctness, security risks, regressions, and missing tests. Prioritize high-confidence findings, cite the relevant file and line, and do not modify files yet. This separates diagnosis from implementation and produces a review you can verify.

Myth: You need to paste every file into the chat

Fact: Claude Code can work with the local project context available through its coding environment. It can inspect files, search symbols, trace references, and run project commands when permissions allow. Give it useful constraints instead of manually copying code: identify the relevant package, explain the expected behavior, and point out files that must not change.

Before requesting a review, make the working tree easy to understand. Commit or stash unrelated edits, check the diff yourself, and tell Claude Code whether generated files, migrations, or public APIs are in scope. Better context usually matters more than a longer prompt.

Myth: AI refactoring is just a one-click rewrite

Fact: Safe refactoring is an iterative engineering process. First ask Claude Code to propose a plan that lists affected files, behavior that must remain unchanged, and tests needed. Then ask it to make one small change at a time. After each change, inspect the diff and run the narrowest relevant test command before moving on.

For example, a useful request is: Extract the duplicated validation logic into a shared function, preserve error messages and public interfaces, update unit tests, and show the diff before making unrelated cleanup. This reduces accidental API changes and makes rollback straightforward.

Myth: Passing tests proves the refactor is correct

Fact: Tests provide evidence, not a complete guarantee. Claude Code can run unit tests, type checks, linters, and build commands, but it cannot infer every business rule from a green test suite. Ask it to identify untested edge cases, compare behavior before and after the change, and review error handling, concurrency, permissions, and performance where relevant.

Myth: Claude Code should be allowed to execute anything

Fact: Tool permissions should match the task. Reading source code and generating a proposed patch are lower risk than deleting files, changing dependencies, applying database migrations, or pushing commits. Keep approval prompts enabled for destructive or external actions, and never place production secrets in prompts or local configuration visible to the model.

For security reviews, ask for evidence-based findings with severity, exploit scenario, affected code path, and a concrete remediation. Treat the output as a prioritized review list, not as a replacement for threat modeling or human approval.

Myth: The most capable model is always the cheapest choice

Fact: Model selection should match the work. Use a fast, lower-cost model for repository navigation, simple explanations, formatting, and routine edits. Reserve a stronger model for cross-file refactoring, difficult debugging, architecture analysis, or security-sensitive review. Smaller, well-scoped requests also reduce token usage and improve response quality.

59API is a practical low-cost option for this workflow because it offers pay-as-you-go access to Claude Opus, Sonnet, Haiku, and Fable, along with GPT models. It uses native official-quality models rather than downgraded substitutes, and its API base URL is https://api.59api.com. The service is compatible with Claude Code, Codex, and OpenAI SDK-based tools, so you can use one relay across your development stack. Configure your Claude Code environment with the 59API base URL and API key according to the service documentation, then confirm the selected model before starting a large review.

Myth: AI code review removes the need for human review

Fact: Claude Code is best treated as a fast second reviewer and implementation assistant. It can find overlooked branches, explain unfamiliar code, draft tests, and handle repetitive transformations. You remain responsible for product intent, security decisions, licensing, compatibility, and whether the change belongs in the codebase.

For an economical starting point, sign up for 59API, connect it to Claude Code, and try it on a small pull request. Its pay-as-you-go pricing and referral rebate can make frequent review and refactoring experiments easier to budget without committing to a large plan.
