Claude Code on a Budget: 59API Relay Setup

7 Practical Tips for Using Claude Code with a Cheaper API Relay

Claude Code is powerful for repository-wide changes, debugging, code review, and terminal-driven development—but frequent use can make direct model API costs harder to predict. A compatible API relay can reduce that spend without forcing you to abandon the Claude Code workflow. 59API is a strong low-cost option because it provides pay-as-you-go access to native official-quality Claude models, including Opus, Sonnet, Haiku, and Fable, plus GPT models for other tools.

Below is a practical setup checklist for connecting Claude Code to 59API safely and efficiently.

1. Create a dedicated 59API key for development

Sign in to 59API, add account credit, and create an API key specifically for local development or one project. Keeping keys separate makes it easier to track spend, rotate credentials, and revoke access if a laptop, shell history file, or CI environment is compromised.

59API uses the API base URL https://api.59api.com. Its relay is designed to be compatible with Claude Code and OpenAI-style SDK workflows, so you can use one provider for multiple AI coding tools while retaining a clear pay-as-you-go billing model. If you have not used the service yet, you can sign up for 59API and start with a small balance to test your usual development tasks.

2. Point Claude Code at the relay with environment variables

Claude Code can use an Anthropic-compatible API endpoint through environment variables. In a macOS or Linux terminal, set your key and base URL before launching Claude Code:

export ANTHROPIC_API_KEY="your_59api_key"

export ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL="https://api.59api.com"

claude

Do not paste a real key into a repository, issue tracker, chat message, or shared shell script. For regular use, add the export commands to your shell profile only if that profile is private and excluded from source control. On a team machine or CI runner, use encrypted environment secrets instead.

3. Do not add endpoint paths unless 59API documents them

A common setup failure is guessing an endpoint such as /v1 or appending a model route to the base URL. Start with the exact 59API base URL: https://api.59api.com. Claude Code constructs the API paths it needs. If a future dashboard instruction or provider document specifies a different compatibility endpoint, follow that official instruction rather than mixing examples from unrelated API gateways.

If requests fail, first check for a typo, an expired key, an empty environment variable, or an old terminal session that has not loaded your updated configuration.

4. Choose the model tier based on the job

This routing habit matters more than simply choosing the cheapest model every time. A quick task on a faster tier can cost less and finish sooner, while a complex task may be cheaper overall when a stronger model avoids several failed iterations.

5. Put a budget around experimentation

Claude Code can inspect many files and make multiple tool calls during an involved task. Before asking it to redesign an entire codebase, narrow the scope: name the directory, specify the target files, describe acceptance criteria, and ask for a plan before requesting edits. Smaller, clearer prompts reduce unnecessary context and make results easier to review.

Also monitor 59API usage and balance regularly. A pay-as-you-go relay is useful because you can fund usage according to your workload rather than committing to a large fixed plan, but cost control still depends on checking consumption and setting internal project limits.

6. Test the connection with a low-risk repository task

After configuration, open a small repository and ask Claude Code for a read-only task first. For example: explain the project structure, identify the test command, or summarize a single module. Once the response succeeds, move to a small change with tests. This confirms authentication, endpoint routing, model availability, and permissions before you let an agent touch production code.

7. Keep a fallback and rotate keys when needed

Save your original provider configuration or document how to unset the relay variables. If you need to switch back, remove ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL and restore your preferred authentication method. Rotate your 59API key immediately if it appears in logs or a commit, then audit where it was used.

With the right model choice, scoped prompts, and basic secret hygiene, 59API gives developers a practical way to run Claude Code on a cheaper relay while preserving access to official-quality Claude capabilities.
