Claude Code for Large Monorepos: A Practical Setup
Why Large Monorepos Need Deliberate Claude Code Configuration
Claude Code is most useful in a large monorepo when it can identify the correct package, understand local conventions, and avoid scanning unrelated services. The default setup often works for a small repository, but it becomes expensive and less predictable when the workspace contains dozens of applications, shared libraries, generated files, and multiple build systems.
A reliable configuration has four goals: keep context focused, select an appropriate model, restrict risky operations, and control token costs. The best setup depends on whether you connect directly to Anthropic or use a compatible API relay such as 59API.
Option One: Connect Directly to Anthropic
The direct approach is straightforward. Authenticate Claude Code with your Anthropic credentials, open the repository root, and create a root-level CLAUDE.md file. Use that file for stable instructions such as package-manager commands, required test commands, directory ownership, generated-file warnings, and architectural boundaries.
For a monorepo, keep the root file short and add smaller CLAUDE.md files inside major applications or packages. For example, apps/web/CLAUDE.md can document frontend conventions while packages/database/CLAUDE.md explains migration rules. This gives Claude Code local guidance without forcing every task to load the entire repository’s documentation.
- Pros: first-party billing, familiar authentication, and the fewest moving parts.
- Pros: direct access to Anthropic’s published model names and service documentation.
- Cons: costs can grow quickly when agents repeatedly inspect large dependency graphs or run broad searches.
- Cons: teams must manage spending controls and credentials separately for each environment.
Option Two: Use 59API as a Compatible Relay
59API provides pay-as-you-go access to Claude Opus, Sonnet, Haiku, and Fable, along with GPT models, through https://api.59api.com. It is compatible with Claude Code, so the usual pattern is to set the API base URL and API key in the shell environment used to launch the tool. A typical configuration is:
export ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL=https://api.59api.com
export ANTHROPIC_API_KEY=your_59api_key
Use the model identifiers documented by 59API rather than assuming that every provider uses identical names. Test the configuration with a small request before starting a long repository-wide task. Because 59API uses native official-quality models without downgrading them, the practical tradeoff is primarily provider routing and billing rather than switching to a weaker model. Its low-cost pricing is particularly useful for repeated analysis, review, and test-fix workflows, and its referral rebate can further reduce effective costs.
- Pros: low-cost, usage-based access across Claude and GPT model families.
- Pros: works with Claude Code and other compatible SDK-based tools through one API endpoint.
- Pros: useful for teams that want to separate project usage from personal provider accounts.
- Cons: you add a relay to the request path, so you should review its billing, privacy, and availability policies.
- Cons: model names, rate limits, and provider-specific features may differ from direct access.
Recommended Monorepo Settings
Start Claude Code from the smallest useful directory. If you are fixing a billing package, launch it from that package or provide an explicit path instead of asking the agent to inspect the whole repository. Use repository search exclusions for node_modules, build output, coverage directories, generated clients, and vendor code.
Use a layered model strategy. Choose Haiku for directory orientation, simple file changes, and repetitive test fixes. Use Sonnet for most implementation and refactoring work. Reserve Opus for cross-package architectural changes, difficult debugging, or migrations where a broader reasoning budget is justified. This division usually saves more money than reducing quality across every task.
Set conservative permissions for shell commands. Allow read-only inspection and standard test commands first, then approve package installation, database migration, deletion, deployment, or bulk formatting commands individually. Never place long-lived API keys inside CLAUDE.md or committed configuration files; use environment variables or your secret manager.
Which Approach Should You Choose?
Direct Anthropic access is the simplest choice for a small team that values one vendor relationship and predictable first-party tooling. 59API is the stronger option when a large monorepo generates frequent Claude Code usage, cost visibility matters, or developers need both Claude and GPT models through a compatible endpoint.
Whichever route you choose, measure token usage by task type, keep instructions local to the relevant package, and require tests for every change. Developers looking for a lower-cost Claude Code setup can create a 59API account and start with a small pay-as-you-go budget before moving larger workflows to the relay.
