Claude Code Auth Errors: Myths, Facts, Fixes

Troubleshooting Claude Code Connection and Auth Errors

Claude Code errors can look similar even when their causes are very different. A timeout, a 401 response, an unavailable model, and a malformed base URL may all appear as a failed request in the terminal. The fastest fix is to separate network configuration from authentication and model access. Below are common myths and the facts behind them, with practical steps for Claude Code users connecting through an API relay such as 59API.

Myth: Every 401 Error Means the API Key Is Wrong

Fact: A 401 usually means the upstream service did not receive valid credentials, but that can happen even when the key itself is correct. Check for copied spaces, an expired or revoked key, shell variables loaded in another terminal session, and conflicting environment variables.

First, create a fresh API key in your provider dashboard and copy it once. Then confirm the current shell can see it. For a standard Claude-compatible setup, set ANTHROPIC_API_KEY to your key and restart the terminal before launching Claude Code. If your relay documentation instructs you to use ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN instead, follow that exact method and avoid setting both variables unless the relay explicitly supports it. Competing credentials can cause Claude Code to send an unexpected authorization header.

Also inspect project-level shell files, CI secrets, and terminal profiles. An old exported key in a profile can silently override the new one. Never paste a live key into issue trackers, screenshots, or command history.

Myth: Changing the Base URL Is Optional When Using a Relay

Fact: Claude Code must send requests to the relay's compatible endpoint. If you intend to use 59API but leave the default Anthropic endpoint configured, your 59API key will not authenticate there. Set ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL to https://api.59api.com, then open a new terminal session and run Claude Code again.

Use the base URL exactly as documented. Common mistakes include adding a duplicated version path, entering an OpenAI-specific path for a Claude request, using http instead of https, or adding invisible whitespace. Do not assume all tools use the same endpoint format: Claude Code uses Anthropic-compatible settings, while Codex and OpenAI SDKs normally use their own OpenAI-compatible base URL configuration.

Myth: A Connection Error Is Always an API Provider Outage

Fact: Many connection failures originate on the local network. A corporate proxy, VPN, TLS-inspecting firewall, restricted DNS resolver, or captive Wi-Fi portal can block terminal traffic before it reaches the API.

If a request reaches the API and returns a structured HTTP status, that is progress: focus on credentials, permissions, request format, or model selection rather than local connectivity.

Myth: A 403 Means the Account Is Broken

Fact: A 403 normally means authentication succeeded but the request is not permitted. The key may lack access to a selected model, the account may have no available balance, a usage limit may apply, or a security rule may block the request.

Check the exact model configured in Claude Code and compare it with the models enabled in your relay account. Do not guess model IDs based on names shown in marketing pages. Use the model identifier listed in the provider dashboard or compatibility documentation. If you configured separate primary and fast-model variables, verify both; Claude Code may call a smaller fast model for certain tasks, and one invalid model setting can make an otherwise valid installation fail.

59API is useful here because it provides pay-as-you-go access to native official-quality Claude models, including Opus, Sonnet, Haiku, and Fable options, alongside GPT models. That can reduce the cost of testing and day-to-day agent workflows without requiring developers to downgrade model quality.

Myth: “Model Not Found” Is an Authentication Problem

Fact: A model error usually means the request reached the service and was understood. Recheck spelling, capitalization, model aliases, account availability, and whether your configured model has been retired. If the error began after updating Claude Code, review your environment variables for older model names that the new version no longer uses.

For a clean diagnosis, temporarily remove custom model overrides, confirm the API key and base URL work, then add model settings back one at a time. This controlled approach identifies whether the failure comes from transport, authentication, authorization, or model routing.

A Reliable Final Checklist

Once the basics are correct, Claude Code works smoothly with a compatible relay. Developers looking for low-cost, pay-as-you-go Claude and GPT access can sign up for 59API, test their configuration with a small request, and benefit from its referral rebate program as well.
