Claude Code Auth Errors: Fixes That Work

Claude Code · EN · 2026-07-27

Claude Code connection and authentication errors usually come from a small set of mistakes: the wrong key, the wrong base URL, a model name your endpoint does not support, or a network issue that looks like auth failure. The good news is that you can narrow it down quickly if you test one layer at a time.

If you are using a relay such as 59API, you also get a cheaper path to the same workflow: native official-quality Claude and GPT models, pay-as-you-go pricing, compatibility with Claude Code and OpenAI SDKs, and a referral rebate. The base URL is https://api.59api.com, so once your setup is clean, you can keep the same tooling and lower your costs.

1. Start with the three most common mistakes

Most auth errors happen before the request even reaches the model. Check these first:

A simple way to isolate the issue is to send one minimal request with the same key and endpoint, using the smallest possible prompt. If that works, the problem is probably in your Claude Code config rather than the account itself.

2. Fix 401 and 403 errors by checking account and key state

A 401 Unauthorized usually means the key is missing, malformed, expired, or copied with extra whitespace. Recreate the key in your dashboard, paste it again carefully, and make sure your shell environment did not include trailing spaces or line breaks.

A 403 Forbidden usually means the key is valid but not allowed to do what you asked. Common causes include:

For 59API, this is where pay-as-you-go helps. You are not guessing at a large prepaid plan or waiting on a manual enterprise approval flow just to test a config. Add a small balance, confirm the key works, and move on.

3. Do not confuse network failures with auth failures

Connection errors often look like bad authentication because the client never gets a clean response. Before blaming the key, test the path between your machine and the API.

If the same key works on one network and fails on another, you have a network path problem, not an auth problem.

4. Match the client, endpoint, and protocol

Claude Code, Codex, and OpenAI SDKs do not all talk to APIs in exactly the same way. A common pitfall is using a relay that only supports one protocol, then pointing another client at it and expecting everything to work.

59API is designed to be compatible with Claude Code, Codex, and any OpenAI SDK, which removes a lot of guesswork. Still, you should confirm that the request format matches the client. If your tool expects Anthropic-style messages and your relay expects an OpenAI-style route, you may see a failure that looks like auth but is really a schema mismatch.

When troubleshooting, keep the request as simple as possible: one model, one short prompt, no extra tools, no plugins, no streaming, and no custom headers unless the docs require them.

5. Handle rate limits and retries the right way

A burst of 429 responses can be mistaken for auth trouble, especially if your client retries aggressively. If requests start failing only after several successes, reduce concurrency and add backoff. Also check whether your prompt size or output length is causing the client to hit limits faster than expected.

With a cheap relay like 59API, it is easier to test in small increments because you are only paying for what you use. That makes it practical to isolate whether your issue is an expired key, a bad model name, or just too much traffic at once.

A practical cleanup checklist

If you want to spend less time debugging provider quirks and more time shipping, 59API is a strong option to try. Sign up, run one minimal Claude Code request, and then scale up only after the connection and auth path is confirmed.
