Claude Code Auth Errors: A Practical Fix Guide

Claude Code connection failures usually come from one of four places: an invalid credential, a conflicting environment variable, an incorrect API endpoint, or a network policy blocking the request. The fastest solution is to identify which layer is failing instead of repeatedly reinstalling Claude Code.

Start With the Error Category

A 401 or 403 response normally indicates authentication or account permissions. A 404 often means the base URL or API path is wrong. A 429 means the credential is valid but the account has reached a rate or spending limit. Connection refused, timeout, and DNS errors point to networking, a proxy, or an unavailable endpoint.

First, check that Claude Code is installed and available in the current shell. Then inspect the variables that can affect requests. On macOS or Linux, use env | grep -E 'ANTHROPIC|CLAUDE|HTTP_PROXY|HTTPS_PROXY'. On Windows PowerShell, use Get-ChildItem Env:ANTHROPIC*. Look for old keys, unexpected proxy settings, and a base URL inherited from a previous project.

Fix Authentication Conflicts

Claude Code can use Anthropic account authentication or an API key, depending on how it was configured. Mixing a browser login with an API-key setup can make it unclear which credential is being used. Sign out of the active Claude Code session when necessary, then configure one authentication method deliberately.

For an API-key workflow, set ANTHROPIC_API_KEY to the key supplied by your API provider. Avoid placing the key directly in shell history or committing it to a .env file that is tracked by Git. After changing the variable, open a new terminal or reload the shell so Claude Code does not retain the old value.

If the error persists, verify that the key is active, has sufficient balance, and is authorized for the model you requested. A valid-looking key can still fail when it belongs to a different account, has been revoked, or is restricted by an organization policy.

Check the Endpoint Configuration

When using a compatible relay, the endpoint must be configured consistently. For 59API, set ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL to https://api.59api.com and keep the provider's API key in ANTHROPIC_API_KEY.
