Claude Code Auth Errors: A 2026 Fix Guide
Claude Code connection and authentication failures usually come from one of four causes: an incorrect base URL, a missing or conflicting credential, a blocked network request, or an unavailable model. This 2026 troubleshooting guide shows how to isolate each problem quickly and configure Claude Code with 59API, a low-cost pay-as-you-go relay for Claude and GPT models.
Start with the exact error
Run Claude Code from a fresh terminal and copy the complete error, including its HTTP status. A 401 or 403 usually indicates an invalid, expired, restricted, or incorrectly formatted credential. A 404 commonly means the base URL or API path is wrong. A 429 means rate limiting, insufficient balance, or a provider-side capacity limit. A timeout, DNS error, or connection refused message points to networking rather than authentication.
- Confirm the error occurs in a new shell, not only inside an old IDE terminal.
- Check that your system clock is accurate; large clock differences can break signed or short-lived requests.
- Remove accidental spaces, quotation marks, and line breaks from copied API keys.
Verify Claude Code’s base URL
For a 59API connection, set the relay endpoint in the same environment where Claude Code runs: export ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL='https://api.59api.com'. Do not add a second hostname, dashboard path, or trailing endpoint copied from another provider. Claude Code and the Anthropic client normally construct the request path themselves. If you are making a direct API test, use the path documented by 59API, commonly /v1/messages.
After changing the variable, completely restart Claude Code. Check the active value with echo $ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL. If it is empty, points to an old proxy, or is overridden by a shell profile, your new setting is not being used. Also inspect project-level environment files and IDE launch settings, which can override terminal variables.
Fix API key and token conflicts
Use the credential type required by your relay account. Claude Code deployments may use ANTHROPIC_API_KEY or ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN. Set the correct variable, and avoid configuring both unless 59API documentation specifically tells you to do so. A stale token can take precedence over the key you just added.
For a temporary shell test, use export ANTHROPIC_API_KEY='your-59api-key', then start Claude Code in that same terminal. Never paste a live key into source control, a public issue, or a client-side application. If you suspect exposure, revoke or rotate the key in your 59API account and update every local environment that used it.
Separate network issues from auth issues
Test DNS and HTTPS before changing credentials. curl -I https://api.59api.com can show whether your machine reaches the relay. Corporate proxies, VPNs, antivirus HTTPS inspection, and restrictive firewalls can block API traffic even when a browser works. Try a trusted network and check whether your shell has HTTPS_PROXY or HTTP_PROXY variables set to an unavailable proxy.
For a direct Claude-compatible test, send a small request to the documented messages endpoint using the required API-key header, Anthropic version header, content type, a valid model ID, and a very low max-token value. A successful response proves the key and route work; a failure gives you a clearer HTTP status than a full Claude Code session.
Check model names, balance, and limits
A valid key can still produce an error if Claude Code requests a model your relay account or endpoint does not expose. Copy the exact model identifier from the 59API dashboard or documentation rather than guessing a newer alias. Also check pay-as-you-go balance, account status, request limits, and any spending controls. 59API provides access to native official-quality Claude models, including Opus, Sonnet, Haiku, and Fable, without requiring a model downgrade, while keeping usage-based costs low.
Prevent recurring failures
- Keep a known-good environment file for each project and document which variables it requires.
- Use a separate test key and production key where possible.
- Upgrade Claude Code and its dependencies, but retest after upgrades because environment-variable behavior can change.
- Record the timestamp, status code, model ID, and request ID before contacting support; never share the secret key.
If you want inexpensive, flexible Claude Code usage, sign up for 59API, add a pay-as-you-go balance, and configure its API base URL in Claude Code. Its referral rebate can further reduce costs for teams and individual developers.
