Is 59API the right API relay for solo developers using Claude Code?

API · EN · 2026-11-03

Is 59API built for a one-person team?

Solo developers rarely have a model preference problem — they have an account management problem. One prototype runs on GPT, a quick script on DeepSeek, a weekend experiment on Gemini, and an afternoon of coding on Claude. Managing separate provider accounts, separate keys and separate billing pages gets old fast, especially while you are also shipping the product.

59API answers that with a deliberately narrow setup: one account, one API key and one API host at https://api.59api.com, covering Claude, GPT, Gemini, DeepSeek and other models. It is an independent third-party AI API relay, so you are buying one prepaid balance instead of juggling several subscriptions.

Financing matters too. There is no monthly fee on the balance. You top up, and 59API charges per request based on real token usage. Your balance never expires, which means a ¥10 top-up for a weekend script does not quietly disappear while you finish a bigger project. Optional monthly and weekly cards exist for developers who prefer a fixed commitment.

That combination suits a specific kind of person: a solo developer, indie hacker or student who wants model choice without a stack of vendor dashboards, and who would rather pay for actual tokens than maintain a minimum spend.

What does it actually cost to run a project?

Cost control starts with knowing what a token actually costs. 59API bills per 1 million tokens in CNY, with USD shown at ¥7.2 = $1, and the price depends on the model you pick. Choosing a lower-cost model changes the shape of your budget: GPT-6.1 Sol is $0.1847 (¥1.33) per 1 million input tokens and $0.9264 (¥6.67) per 1 million output tokens, while DeepSeek V4 Flash is $0.2778 (¥2) input and $1.11 (¥8) output. For lighter work, MiniMax M3 is $0.1389 (¥1) input and $0.5556 (¥4) output.

Claude is priced separately, and the gap against a reference official list price is worth checking. Claude Sonnet 5.5 is $1.11 (¥8) input and $5.56 (¥40) output per 1 million tokens. Claude Haiku 4.5 is $0.3472 (¥2.5) input and $1.67 (¥12) output.

Two worked examples make it concrete. GPT-6.1 Sol with 5M input and 1M output tokens, without cache, costs $1.85 (¥13.32) on 59API; at the official list price of $20 (about ¥144), that is about 9% of list price. Claude Sonnet 5.5 with 3M input and 0.5M output tokens, without cache, costs $6.11 (¥44) on 59API, against an official list price of $11 (about ¥79.2) — about 56% of list price.

For a solo developer, that is the practical question: what does a normal working day of model calls cost, and can you predict it from token counts rather than a subscription? 59API makes it per-request and prepaid.

How do you connect it to your tools?

Setting up 59API takes two values and the right client. For Claude Code or Claude Desktop, set ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL=https://api.59api.com and ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN=YOUR_59API_KEY. Claude models work only through the genuine Claude Code or Claude Desktop client (Claude Code 2.1.285 or newer) — never through the OpenAI SDK, cURL or other clients.

For Codex, OpenAI SDKs, cURL and OpenAI-compatible clients such as Cursor, Cherry Studio, Cline and OpenCode, use base_url https://api.59api.com/v1 and the chat endpoint https://api.59api.com/v1/chat/completions. That path covers GPT, DeepSeek and other non-Claude, non-Gemini models.

Gemini has its own native protocol and belongs in Gemini CLI: set GOOGLE_GEMINI_BASE_URL=https://api.59api.com and GEMINI_API_KEY=YOUR_59API_KEY. Gemini models are not OpenAI-compatible and do not work on /v1/chat/completions.

Why does this matter for a solo developer? Because the model you pick for a batch job is not always the model you want for an interactive session, and the right client is often already in your workflow. 59API does not ask you to rewrite your tooling; it asks you to point it at one host and choose the model family your client speaks. The result is a stack where switching models is a model-id change, not a new account, a new key and a new billing relationship.

Should you use the balance or a card?

Prepaid balance and optional cards solve different problems. The balance is the flexible option: no monthly fee, no expiry, and payment only for tokens you actually consume. Cards are for developers who know one model family will dominate their month and want a predictable spend.

A card has its own key, can only call that family's models and is paid only from the card. It never falls back to wallet balance, and a balance key never draws on a card. Unused quota does not roll over. Quota and caps are card metering units written in $, not official list-price dollars, so they should not be read as a direct price comparison.

For a Claude-heavy month, C-PRO Starter (30 days) is $83.19 (¥599), with quota $1300 and a weekly cap of $500, draining at the card's metering price × 2.4. The C-PRO Standard (30 days) is $152.64 (¥1099) with quota $2650 and a weekly cap of $1000. Short bursts have their own option: the C-PRO $600 weekly card (Claude, 7 days) is $40.14 (¥289), with quota $600 and a weekly cap of $600. On the GPT side, G-PRO Starter (30 days) is $83.19 (¥599), quota $3250 and a weekly cap of $1250.

So: cards when you want a committed envelope, balance when you want to keep every yuan under your own control.

When does 59API fit your workflow?

It fits a solo developer who is shipping a real product and burning real tokens, who wants to move between Claude, GPT, Gemini and DeepSeek without four vendor relationships, and who prefers prepaid spend to a monthly bill. It also fits a student or indie hacker who wants to start small: top-ups start at ¥10, with ¥50, ¥100, ¥200, ¥500 and ¥1000 options, paid by WeChat Pay or bank card, and invoices are available.

The commitment stays light. There is no monthly fee on the balance, and unused balance never expires. If you top up and change your mind, unused balance can be refunded within 7 days of the top-up, minus what was used and payment-channel fees; requests go through the Contact page and are handled within 3 business days.

There is a second way 59API can suit a solo developer: referrals. You earn 15% commission on what people you invite pay for top-ups and cards, and 5% on what their invitees pay. Commission can be withdrawn to Alipay from ¥50 or moved to API balance — so a developer with an audience can turn a recommendation into usable API credit.

Start with one model and one client, keep the balance small, and expand when the usage pattern is clear. That is the whole pitch: one key, one host, token-level billing, and no subscription to forget.
