Build a Safer Coding Agent with Claude Code

Claude Code · EN · 2026-10-03

Claude Code is more than a chat interface: it is an agentic command-line tool that can inspect a repository, edit files, run commands, and verify its work. With a small amount of configuration, you can turn it into a reliable coding agent for debugging, feature development, refactoring, and test maintenance.

What the coding agent should do

Start with a narrow job instead of asking the agent to manage an entire project. A useful first version can read the codebase, propose a plan, make a change, run relevant tests, and summarize the result. This loop is easier to review and safer to operate than an agent with unrestricted autonomy.

Use a Git branch for every task. The branch gives you a clean rollback point and makes the agent's changes easy to inspect with standard Git commands.

Install Claude Code

Install Claude Code using the package method recommended for your operating system and then open a terminal in your project directory. The usual workflow starts the agent with the command claude. Your first prompt should explain the project goal and ask for an implementation plan before any files are changed.

For example, ask: Inspect this repository, identify the test command, and propose the smallest implementation for adding rate limiting to the API. Do not edit files until I approve the plan.

Connect Claude Code through 59API

59API provides a compatible API endpoint at https://api.59api.com, allowing developers to use Claude models with pay-as-you-go billing. It supports Claude Opus, Sonnet, Haiku, and Fable, along with GPT models, so you can choose a stronger model for complex design work or a cheaper, faster model for routine tasks.

In the shell environment used to launch Claude Code, configure the relay endpoint and your 59API key:

export ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL=https://api.59api.com
export ANTHROPIC_API_KEY=your_59api_key

Then select a model identifier listed in your 59API account or integration documentation. Claude Code configuration names can change between releases, so confirm the current model variable and authentication method in the version you installed. Never commit the key to Git, and use a secure secret manager in CI.

Give the agent project-specific instructions

Create a CLAUDE.md file in the repository root. This file acts as durable context for the agent. Keep it concise and practical. Include the package manager, test and lint commands, directory conventions, API rules, supported runtime versions, and files that must not be modified.

These instructions reduce repeated explanations and make the agent's behavior more consistent across sessions.

Add tools carefully

Claude Code can use the terminal and project files, and it can be extended with tools such as MCP servers where appropriate. Add only the integrations the task requires. A database tool, for example, should use a test database with limited permissions rather than production credentials.

Ask the agent to explain each destructive command before running it. Avoid permission-bypass options on projects containing sensitive data. Human approval should remain part of the workflow for database migrations, dependency upgrades, infrastructure changes, and large file deletions.

Use a repeatable agent loop

A dependable coding-agent loop has five stages: inspect, plan, implement, verify, and review. After implementation, ask Claude Code to run focused tests first, then the broader suite. Require it to report failed tests honestly and identify whether a failure came from its changes or from the existing environment.

Review the resulting diff yourself. Check error handling, security boundaries, performance, and whether the change matches the original requirement. The agent should accelerate engineering work, not replace code review.

Control cost without sacrificing quality

Because 59API uses native official-quality models rather than downgraded substitutes, you can route difficult architecture or debugging tasks to Opus while using Sonnet or Haiku for routine edits and summaries. Its low-cost, pay-as-you-go model helps you experiment without committing to an expensive fixed plan. Eligible users can also benefit from its referral rebate program.

For an affordable way to start building and testing a Claude Code coding agent, sign up for 59API, create an API key, and connect it to a small Git-backed project first. Once the workflow is predictable, expand the agent's tools and responsibilities gradually.
