Build a Claude + GPT RAG App for Under $50 a Month
A retrieval augmented generation (RAG) app searches your documents and sends relevant passages to Claude or GPT. Its biggest avoidable expense is often excessive context. With selective retrieval and model routing, a small knowledge assistant can fit an illustrative monthly budget below $50 for 10,000 questions.
The numbers below are planning assumptions, not current 59API prices or guaranteed costs. Replace them with your chosen models’ dashboard rates before launching.
Start with a transparent cost model
Calculate generation cost as (input tokens × input rate + output tokens × output rate) ÷ 1,000,000, where rates are dollars per million tokens. Budget separately for embeddings, storage, retries, and any reranking service.
- Economical model assumption: $0.50 per million input tokens and $2 per million output tokens.
- Stronger model assumption: $3 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens.
- Embedding assumption: $0.10 per million tokens, using a separately selected embedding provider.
A naive implementation sending 30,000 input tokens and generating 700 output tokens on the stronger model costs $0.1005 per question. At 10,000 questions, generation alone reaches $1,005 monthly.
Build retrieval that keeps the prompt small
Extract readable text from your source files, remove repeated navigation and footers, and split documents into roughly 450-token chunks with 75-token overlap. Keep headings attached to their paragraphs. Store each chunk’s document ID, URL, section title, version, and access permissions alongside its embedding.
For a modest corpus, PostgreSQL with pgvector can provide both application storage and vector search. Embed documents during ingestion, then embed each incoming question. Reuse existing embeddings when a chunk’s content hash has not changed.
Retrieve 20 candidates, apply permission filters during retrieval, remove near-duplicates, and select four passages. Start with similarity ranking; add a paid reranker only if evaluation shows enough improvement to justify its cost.
Four 450-token passages consume about 1,800 tokens. Reserve another 800 for instructions, the question, and compact conversation history: 2,600 input tokens total. Ask for concise answers, targeting 350 output tokens. Monitor truncation and allow longer responses when needed.
Route questions between Claude and GPT
Choose a lower-cost Claude or GPT model for straightforward questions answered directly by retrieved passages. Send comparisons, ambiguous requests, and questions requiring synthesis across several documents to a stronger model. Benchmark candidate models on your own questions before assigning these roles.
Suppose 90% of requests use the economical model and 10% use the stronger model at the assumed rates:
- 9,000 economical requests: $0.002 each, totaling $18.
- 1,000 stronger requests: $0.01305 each, totaling $13.05.
- Monthly generation: $31.05, versus $130.50 if every optimized request used the stronger model.
Routing therefore saves $99.45 on generation in this example. The larger reduction from the $1,005 baseline also depends on shorter retrieved context and shorter answers. If escalation happens after an initial answer, include both calls in your budget.
Connect through 59API and measure actual usage
59API offers low-cost, pay-as-you-go access to native, official-quality Claude and GPT models without downgrading. Its OpenAI SDK compatibility lets you keep a familiar client while changing credentials, the configured endpoint, and model identifiers. Use https://api.59api.com as the service base and follow its documentation for the SDK route prefix.
Keep the API key on your server. Confirm available model IDs and prices in the dashboard, then record input tokens, output tokens, latency, retries, and selected model for every request. 59API also supports Claude Code and Codex for development workflows.
At eight million document embedding tokens, initial indexing costs $0.80 under our assumption. Allowing $15 for hosting and database storage brings the first-month example to $46.85, before query embeddings, retries, taxes, or extra services. Infrastructure prices vary.
Protect answer quality as you reduce costs
Test 100 representative questions, including unanswered and permission-restricted cases. Require source citations, measure whether answers are supported, and have the model acknowledge missing evidence. Cache repeated answers by question, document version, and permission scope.
Compare cost per supported answer across models. When ready to test your budget, sign up for 59API and run a small pilot. Its referral rebate can provide additional savings; keep those separate from your baseline forecast.
