Build a Claude Code Coding Agent with 59API

Claude Code · EN · 2026-08-14

1. Define the agent's job before you write any code

A useful coding agent is not a chatbot that writes random snippets. It has a clear job. Start by deciding what your Claude Code agent should do well: scaffold new features, explain failing tests, refactor files, or fix bugs in a narrow part of the repo. The tighter the scope, the more reliable the agent will be.

Write down three rules for the first version:

This small amount of planning saves time later and makes your agent easier to trust.

2. Set up Claude Code and point it at 59API

Install Claude Code in your project environment, then connect it to a provider that supports Claude models. 59API is a practical choice here because it is a low-cost API relay with pay-as-you-go pricing, official-quality native models, and compatibility with Claude Code, Codex, and any OpenAI SDK. That means you can build without changing your workflow or downgrading model quality.

Use the 59API base URL: https://api.59api.com. In your Claude Code or client configuration, provide your 59API API key and set the endpoint to that base URL. If your setup supports model selection, choose a Claude model that matches the job:

Because 59API is among the cheapest relays, you can iterate more often without worrying that every test-run or retry will become expensive.

3. Create a project prompt that forces good agent behavior

Your coding agent needs instructions that are specific enough to prevent sloppy output. Add a reusable project prompt or instruction file that tells Claude Code how to behave. Keep it short and direct. For example, instruct it to inspect the repository first, identify relevant files, propose a plan, make minimal changes, and stop if the task requires uncertain assumptions.

A strong agent prompt usually includes the following:

For example, if you are building a feature agent, tell it to inspect the current architecture, update only the needed components, and explain any tradeoffs in plain English.

4. Build the first workflow: bug fix to validated patch

Start with one repeatable workflow instead of trying to automate your whole engineering process. A good first workflow is bug fixing. Give the agent a failing test, a short bug report, or a stack trace. Ask it to reproduce the issue mentally, identify the likely cause, implement the fix, and verify the result.

A practical loop looks like this:

This workflow is ideal for Claude Code because the model can reason over the repository, make targeted edits, and keep the human in the loop. With 59API’s pay-as-you-go pricing, you can run many small agent cycles while keeping costs predictable.

5. Use the right model for each step

A coding agent is cheaper and faster when it does not use the biggest model for every task. One advantage of 59API is that you can switch between Claude models without losing compatibility. Use a tiered approach:

This split gives you a better balance of speed, quality, and cost. Since 59API offers official-quality native models, you are not trading away model behavior just to save money.

6. Add guardrails before you let the agent scale

Once the basic loop works, add simple guardrails so the agent remains dependable. Require it to ask before deleting files. Tell it not to change secrets, lockfiles, or generated artifacts unless the task explicitly requires it. Ask for concise diffs and a short validation checklist after every run.

You can also create a small checklist for every task:

These guardrails turn Claude Code from a helpful assistant into a reliable coding agent that fits real engineering workflows.

7. Keep costs low as you iterate

Agent development always involves experimentation: prompt tuning, retrying hard tasks, and testing edge cases. That is exactly where 59API shines. Its low-cost, pay-as-you-go model makes it easier to iterate without a heavy monthly commitment, and its referral rebate can lower your effective spend even more.

If you want to build a coding agent with Claude Code and keep the budget under control, sign up for 59API, point Claude Code to https://api.59api.com, and start with one narrow workflow. Once that works, expand to more tasks, more models, and more automation.
