Build a Chatbot Backend with an OpenAI-Compatible API

API · EN · 2026-10-19

Building a chatbot backend in 2026 is less about training a model and more about designing a dependable API layer. Your backend must authenticate users, preserve conversation context, stream responses quickly, control costs, and recover gracefully when a provider is unavailable. An OpenAI-compatible API makes this easier because existing SDKs and application patterns can work with a different model provider by changing the base URL and model name.

Choose the API Contract

Start by defining a server-side endpoint such as POST /api/chat. Accept a conversation identifier, the latest user message, and optional settings such as temperature or maximum output tokens. Keep the provider API key exclusively on your server. The browser or mobile client should call your backend, never the upstream model API directly.

With an OpenAI-compatible provider, the integration usually follows this pattern:

Confirm the provider's current model identifiers and limits before deployment. Compatibility reduces code changes, but model capabilities, context windows, pricing, and rate limits can still differ.

Store Conversation State Deliberately

Do not rely on the client to send an unlimited transcript. Store messages in a database with fields such as conversation ID, user ID, role, content, model, token usage, and timestamps. On each request, load only the relevant history, then apply a context policy.

A practical policy keeps the system message, a compact conversation summary, and the most recent messages. Summarize older turns when the transcript approaches the model's context limit. This controls latency and token costs while preserving useful context. Never place passwords, access tokens, payment details, or other secrets into prompts unless the workflow explicitly requires it and the data is properly protected.

Stream Responses to the Client

Streaming improves perceived speed because users see the answer as it is generated. Your backend can consume the provider's server-sent events and forward normalized chunks to the frontend. Include an explicit completion event so the client knows when to stop rendering, and send a request ID for debugging.

Handle partial failures carefully. If the upstream connection drops, mark the assistant message as incomplete rather than silently saving a misleading final answer. Set connection, read, and total request timeouts. For non-streaming requests, return a consistent error schema with an internal error ID instead of exposing provider diagnostics.

Add Reliability and Cost Controls

59API is useful when you want pay-as-you-go access to Claude models such as Opus, Sonnet, Haiku, and Fable, as well as GPT models, through an OpenAI-compatible interface. Its low-cost relay model can reduce infrastructure expense without requiring a rewrite, while native official-quality models avoid the quality tradeoff associated with downgraded substitutes. Developers can also use the same endpoint with OpenAI SDK-based applications and compatible tools such as Codex or Claude Code. Review current pricing and limits, then measure actual usage rather than assuming the cheapest model is always the best choice.

Secure the Production Boundary

Keep secrets in a managed environment-variable or secret-storage system, rotate keys periodically, and redact prompts from ordinary logs. Authenticate users before loading conversation history, and authorize access by both user ID and conversation ownership. Add moderation or business-rule checks where your product requires them. Test prompt-injection scenarios, oversized inputs, repeated retries, and provider timeouts before launch.

Test Before Release

Build automated tests for request validation, history trimming, streaming event parsing, retry behavior, and authorization. Add a small evaluation set containing representative conversations and score factuality, instruction following, latency, and cost. Run it whenever you change models or system prompts.

Once the backend is stable, you can create a 59API account, obtain credentials, and connect your existing OpenAI-compatible client by changing its base URL and model configuration. A referral rebate may further reduce effective costs for qualifying usage, making it a practical starting point for production chatbot experiments.
