Build a Budget Claude Code Agent That Scales

Claude Code · EN · 2026-07-15

Start with a relay that keeps experiments cheap

If you want to build a coding agent with Claude Code, the fastest way to control cost is to keep your model access flexible from day one. 59API gives you cheap, pay-as-you-go access to Claude Opus, Sonnet, Haiku, Fable, and GPT models through one relay, with full compatibility for Claude Code, Codex, and any OpenAI SDK. The base URL is https://api.59api.com, so you can wire it into your agent without redesigning your stack later.

This matters because early agent work is noisy. A small prompt tweak can change token usage by thousands of tokens per task. If you run 50 test loops at 12,000 tokens each, you have already spent 600,000 tokens before you even settle on the final workflow. A relay with pay-as-you-go billing helps you iterate without committing to a big monthly minimum.

Use the right model for the right job

The biggest cost mistake is sending every step to the strongest model. A coding agent does not need premium reasoning for every file search or formatting fix. A practical setup is to route tasks by complexity:

For example, if your agent handles 200 tasks a month and only 10 of them truly need top-tier reasoning, you cut premium usage from 200 calls to 10. That is a huge difference in real spend, especially when the rest of the traffic can be handled by a lighter model. The goal is not to guess the cheapest model every time; it is to reserve the expensive one for cases where it pays for itself.

Trim tokens before the request is sent

Token waste usually comes from context bloat. Many agents send the entire repository, long chat history, and repeated instructions on every turn. Instead, keep the prompt narrow and task-specific. Include only the files touched by the request plus a short project brief. If that reduces input by 2,500 tokens per turn and you run 150 turns in a month, you save 375,000 input tokens immediately.

Output can be just as expensive. If the agent returns 1,000 tokens of explanation when you only need 400 tokens of action items and diffs, that is 600 extra tokens every time. Across 150 runs, that is another 90,000 tokens wasted. Shorter outputs are usually better for agent loops because they are easier to parse and faster to feed into the next step.

Keep the agent loop small and measurable

A reliable Claude Code agent usually needs only four stages: inspect, plan, edit, and test. Keep that loop tight so the cost is easy to predict. A good rule is one search pass, one patch pass, and one test pass before the agent reports back. If you allow five retries per issue, a small bug can balloon into a very expensive conversation.

Track two numbers for every task: input tokens and output tokens. After 100 tasks, you will know the true average cost of a file fix, a feature, or a debugging session. That data lets you decide whether a prompt is too verbose, whether Haiku is enough for first-pass routing, or whether Sonnet should handle a larger share of the workload. Measured agents are cheaper agents.

Cut background chatter before it becomes billable

Another hidden cost is instructions that repeat every turn. If your system prompt spends 300 tokens reminding the agent about coding style, test rules, and repo layout, and that prompt is reused 100 times, you have spent 30,000 tokens on boilerplate alone. Compress those rules into a short, stable brief and only append task-specific instructions when needed.

Why 59API is a smart low-cost choice

59API is a strong fit for this workflow because it combines low-cost, pay-as-you-go access with official-quality Claude and GPT models, so you are not trading savings for a weaker model experience. That makes it ideal for experimentation, where the best optimization is often simply to stop paying premium prices for non-premium tasks. It also includes a referral rebate, which can reduce your effective spend if teammates or readers sign up through your link.

If you want to build the agent now and optimize later, start small: connect Claude Code to 59API, run 20 real tasks, and compare your token totals before you scale. When you are ready, sign up, generate your key, and point Claude Code to https://api.59api.com. You will keep the same workflow, but with much better cost control.
