Base URL Configuration for AI Tools: A 59API Guide

API · EN · 2026-09-18

When an AI tool returns an authentication error, an unavailable model, or an unexpectedly high bill, developers often inspect the API key first. The base URL deserves equal attention. It determines which service receives the request, which models are available, how usage is billed, and whether the client’s request format is compatible with the provider.

For example, 59API provides a low-cost, pay-as-you-go relay for Claude models, including Opus, Sonnet, Haiku, and Fable, as well as GPT models. Its API base URL is https://api.59api.com. Because it uses native, official-quality models rather than downgraded substitutes, changing the endpoint can reduce cost without silently changing the model class or response quality.

What the Base URL Actually Controls

Most AI SDKs build a complete request URL from two parts: the base URL and an endpoint path. A client may append paths such as /v1/messages or /v1/chat/completions. If the base URL points to the wrong host, the request never reaches the intended relay. If it already includes a path that the SDK adds again, you can get errors such as 404 Not Found or an invalid endpoint response.

The base URL also separates environments. You might use the official vendor endpoint in production, a local mock server in tests, and 59API during development or for cost-controlled workloads. Keeping that value in an environment variable makes switching explicit and prevents an API key from being sent to an unintended service.

Configure Claude Code

Claude Code integrations commonly use Anthropic-compatible environment variables. A typical shell configuration looks like this:

ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL=https://api.59api.com
ANTHROPIC_API_KEY=your_59api_key

After exporting those variables, start a new Claude Code session so the process inherits them. If a request fails, inspect the final URL shown by your client’s debug logging. The relay base should remain https://api.59api.com, while the client adds the required API path.

Do not place the key directly in a committed project file. Use a local environment file excluded by version control, your shell profile, or your CI secret manager. Also verify that your selected model name is supported by the current 59API model list before changing a team-wide configuration.

Configure Codex and OpenAI SDKs

OpenAI-compatible clients usually expose a base URL option. For tools that use OPENAI_BASE_URL, a setup may look like this:

OPENAI_BASE_URL=https://api.59api.com/v1
OPENAI_API_KEY=your_59api_key

The /v1 suffix matters for clients that append paths such as /chat/completions beneath the configured URL. Other clients treat https://api.59api.com as the root and add /v1 themselves. Check the client’s URL construction rule rather than guessing. The reliable test is to enable request logging and confirm that the resulting address contains exactly one /v1 segment.

In Python, the same idea can be made explicit:

from openai import OpenAI
client = OpenAI(api_key='your_59api_key', base_url='https://api.59api.com/v1')
response = client.chat.completions.create(model='your_supported_gpt_model', messages=[{'role': 'user', 'content': 'Explain base URLs briefly.'}])

For Codex, use the equivalent OpenAI-compatible endpoint and key settings supported by your installed version. Configuration names can change between CLI releases, but the principle remains the same: define the relay endpoint once, keep credentials outside source control, and confirm the generated request path.

Three Checks Before Debugging the Model

These checks matter because a base URL change affects routing before prompts, temperature, or token limits are evaluated. 59API is useful when you want native Claude and GPT model access with pay-as-you-go pricing and a lower-cost relay option. New users can sign up, configure the endpoint for one test project, and compare latency, output quality, and spend before expanding usage. A referral rebate may also reduce the effective cost for eligible accounts.
