AI Token Counting in 2026: A Developer’s Practical Guide

Preços · EN · 2026-10-20

What Are Tokens in AI?

Tokens are the units an AI model uses to process and generate information. For text, a token can represent a word, part of a word, punctuation, or whitespace. Tokenization converts your text into a sequence of token IDs before the model processes it.

A token is not the same as a word or character. A short, common word might be one token, while an unfamiliar identifier, URL, or long number may require several. Different models can tokenize the same text differently, so there is no universal, exact word-to-token conversion.

For developers in 2026, understanding tokens helps answer three practical questions: Will this request fit the model’s context window? How much will it cost? Where can I reduce unnecessary usage?

How Are Tokens Counted?

A text request typically has two main categories:

Message formatting and special tokens can add overhead beyond the text you see. Copying only your latest question into a tokenizer therefore does not necessarily reproduce the complete API input count.

Some reasoning models also consume reasoning tokens that are not displayed as ordinary answer text. These can affect billed output and generation limits. Check the model’s usage documentation; if reasoning tokens are already included in the output total, do not add them again.

Estimate First, Then Measure

For ordinary English prose, one token is roughly four characters, or about three-quarters of a word. A 1,000-word document might therefore be around 1,300 tokens. This is a planning shortcut, not a billing guarantee.

Code, JSON, multilingual text, emoji, and random-looking strings can behave very differently. Non-text inputs also need separate handling: image, audio, and video accounting depends on the model and modality, and some services price certain media in units other than tokens.

Turn Token Counts Into Cost

Input and output usually have different prices. For standard uncached text usage, calculate: cost = input tokens × input rate ÷ 1,000,000 + output tokens × output rate ÷ 1,000,000, when rates are quoted per million tokens.

For example, assume hypothetical rates of $1 per million input tokens and $5 per million output tokens. A request using 2,000 input tokens and 500 output tokens costs $0.0045. These figures illustrate the calculation; they are not a 59API price quote.

Caching can change the calculation. Cache reads and cache creation may have separate rates and usage fields. Follow the endpoint’s accounting definitions rather than assuming cached tokens are free or adding overlapping totals.

Keep Requests Within Limits

A context window is the model’s working capacity for a request, not a monthly allowance. Account for input, formatting overhead, and room for generation under the model’s documented limits. Reasoning-capable models may need additional generation headroom.

Long chats often become more expensive because earlier messages are resent. Trim irrelevant history, summarize completed work, retrieve only relevant document passages, and set a sensible output limit. A larger output limit generally reserves capacity; it does not automatically mean every reserved token is billed.

Use a Low-Cost API Without Losing Visibility

59API offers low-cost, pay-as-you-go access to native Claude and GPT models without model downgrades, plus compatibility with Claude Code, Codex, and OpenAI SDK workflows. Its API base URL is https://api.59api.com; follow its integration documentation for endpoint paths and authentication.

Compare each model’s current rates, cache treatment, and returned usage against your workload. A referral rebate can provide additional savings, subject to program terms. If you want to test your real token costs without a subscription commitment, consider signing up for 59API and starting with a small, measured workload.
