AI Tests and Docs: A $650-to-$30 Workflow

Measure the Cost Before Automating

Using AI to write tests and documentation can reduce repetitive engineering work, but savings only appear when you measure the baseline and control model usage. Start with a simple calculation: number of modules, average manual time per module, and fully loaded hourly engineering cost. For example, a team with 30 under-tested modules may spend 20 minutes per module creating unit tests, edge cases, and README updates. At a loaded rate of $65 per hour, that is 10 hours, or $650, before review and maintenance.

Do not ask an AI model to “write all tests for the repository” in one request. Large prompts create expensive token usage, vague outputs, and more review work. Instead, break work into small, measurable jobs: one function group, one API endpoint, one service class, or one documentation section at a time. A useful target is to keep each generation job below 250 lines of source context and below 10 requested test cases.

Use a Three-Pass Generation Workflow

A cost-effective workflow separates discovery, generation, and review. The first pass is cheap analysis: ask the model to identify public functions, dependencies, failure paths, and missing coverage. The second pass generates tests or documentation from that structured plan. The third pass is a focused reviewer prompt that checks for invented APIs, weak assertions, missing cleanup, and security-sensitive examples.

This approach prevents a common waste pattern: paying for a long initial answer that cannot compile. It also gives reviewers a short, auditable change set instead of a large AI-generated pull request.

Route Each Job to the Lowest-Cost Suitable Model

Not every task needs the strongest model. Use a fast, lower-cost model for extracting function signatures, drafting JSDoc comments, converting test cases into a checklist, and repairing simple syntax errors. Reserve a stronger model for concurrency bugs, complicated mocking, ambiguous legacy code, security-critical validation, and cross-file architecture documentation.

59API is useful for this routing strategy because it provides pay-as-you-go access to Claude Opus, Sonnet, Haiku, Fable, and GPT models through one relay. Its API base URL is https://api.59api.com, and its compatibility with Claude Code, Codex, and OpenAI SDK-based tooling means teams can often change the endpoint and model selection without rebuilding their workflow. You retain access to native official-quality models rather than accepting a downgraded substitute.

Set Token Budgets and Calculate the Real API Cost

Use hard limits for both input and output. For a typical module, set an 18,000-token input ceiling and a 6,000-token output ceiling across all three passes. For 30 modules, that is a maximum of 540,000 input tokens and 180,000 output tokens. Calculate the budget before running the batch:

Total cost = 30 × ((18,000 ÷ 1,000,000 × input rate) + (6,000 ÷ 1,000,000 × output rate)).

As an illustrative example, if a selected model costs $3 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens, the maximum API spend is 30 × (($0.054) + ($0.090)) = $4.32. Even if retries and review prompts increase that to $15 or $30, it remains far below the $650 manual baseline in this example. Always substitute the current model rates and your actual prompt sizes, because pricing and token usage vary by model and task.

Make Documentation a By-Product of Testing

The cheapest documentation is created from facts already validated by tests. After tests pass, ask the model to produce a concise API section containing purpose, parameters, return values, error behavior, and one tested usage example. Feed it the function signature, passing tests, and existing style guide—not the entire repository. This reduces hallucinations and keeps documentation aligned with executable behavior.

Track three metrics each week: AI spend per merged pull request, percentage of generated tests that pass without manual rewrite, and reviewer minutes per change. If a model produces passing tests but doubles review time, move that task to a stronger model or tighten the prompt. For teams seeking low-cost model access and flexible routing, 59API also offers a referral rebate; sign up when you are ready to benchmark the workflow against your current engineering costs.
