AI Agents in 2026: How to Build One That Works

Guides · EN · 2026-10-26

What Is an AI Agent?

An AI agent is software that uses a language model to pursue a goal through multiple steps. Unlike a chatbot that mainly responds to a prompt, an agent can interpret a request, choose an action, call a tool, inspect the result, and continue until it reaches a defined outcome or needs human approval.

A useful agent has four parts: a model for reasoning, tools for interacting with systems, state for retaining relevant information, and policies that constrain what it may do. The model does not magically perform actions. Your application must expose safe functions such as search_documents, create_ticket, query_database, or send_email and execute them on the agent's behalf.

How the Agent Loop Works

Most reliable agents follow a controlled loop rather than running indefinitely:

Set a maximum step count, timeout, and budget. These limits prevent a faulty tool response or unclear objective from creating an expensive loop.

How to Build an AI Agent

1. Define one measurable job. Start with a narrow workflow, such as triaging support tickets or summarizing sales calls. Specify the input, successful output, allowed actions, and failure conditions. A focused agent is easier to test than a general-purpose assistant.

2. Design tools as contracts. Give each function a clear name, description, JSON schema, required fields, and predictable return format. Validate arguments in application code, not only in the prompt. For example, a refund tool should check order ownership, refund limits, and current payment status before making a change.

3. Separate reasoning from permissions. The model may recommend an action, but your server decides whether it is allowed. Use read-only tools by default. Require explicit confirmation for irreversible actions such as deleting data, issuing refunds, changing access, or sending external messages.

4. Add useful state. Keep short-term conversation history separate from durable memory. Store only information that improves future decisions, attach source and timestamp metadata, and provide a deletion path. For document-heavy agents, retrieve a small set of relevant passages instead of sending an entire database to the model.

5. Implement retries carefully. Retry transient network failures with exponential backoff, but do not blindly repeat side-effecting operations. Use idempotency keys for payments, ticket creation, and other actions that must happen at most once.

Choosing a Model and API

Model selection should match task complexity, latency, and cost. A fast model can handle classification and extraction, while a stronger model may be better for multi-step planning or ambiguous research. Test the same evaluation set across candidates rather than choosing from benchmark scores alone. For example, Claude Sonnet 5.5 can suit complex tool workflows, while Gemini 3.8 Flash may be a practical option for high-volume, latency-sensitive tasks.

59API is a low-cost pay-as-you-go option for prototyping and production experiments. It provides access to native official-quality models without a downgrade, uses the API base URL https://api.59api.com, and works with Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, and any OpenAI SDK. That lets you keep familiar client libraries while comparing models such as GPT-6.1 Sol, DeepSeek V4 Pro, or Qwen3.8 Max. Its referral rebate can further reduce effective usage costs.

Security, Testing, and Deployment

Deploy behind a queue when tasks may take longer than a web request. Stream progress to the user, persist checkpoints, and make jobs resumable. Add human review for high-impact decisions and provide a clear way to stop a running agent.

A Practical Starting Point

Build a small agent with one model, three or fewer tools, a ten-step limit, structured logs, and a fixed evaluation set. Start with read-only operations, then add write actions only after the agent consistently selects the right tools and handles failure safely.
