A Small Team’s 15-Minute AI API Cost Estimate

Pricing · EN · 2026-10-21

Start with workloads, not model prices

A small team’s monthly AI API bill depends on how often people use models, how much context each request includes, and how much output comes back. A cheap token rate helps, but an autonomous coding agent can make several requests for one task. Here is a quick way to build a useful estimate before committing your budget.

1. Count requests by workflow

Separate interactive chat, coding agents, and automated jobs. For each workflow, record active users, working days per month, and average API requests per user per day. Count API calls, not prompts typed: tool loops, retries, and follow-up requests all contribute to usage.

For example, five developers making 25 routine API requests each per working day generate 5 × 20 × 25 = 2,500 requests per month. Keep occasional heavyweight tasks in a separate row so they do not disappear inside an optimistic average.

2. Measure input and output separately

Run a representative sample of tasks and collect the token usage returned by the API. Input includes system instructions, conversation history, retrieved documents, repository context, and tool results. Output includes generated responses; check the provider’s billing rules for reasoning tokens and other model-specific categories.

Start with 20–50 representative requests per workflow. Calculate average input and output tokens, then inspect unusually large requests. Coding sessions often grow more expensive as conversation history accumulates, so include long sessions rather than measuring only first turns.

Monthly cost = (monthly input tokens ÷ 1,000,000 × input price) + (monthly output tokens ÷ 1,000,000 × output price). If cached input has a separate rate, split cached and uncached tokens into separate terms instead of applying an assumed discount.

3. Build a five-developer example

The rates below are illustrative only, not current 59API prices. Replace them with the live rates for your exact model and billing route.

The combined estimate is $93.75 per month. Adding a 25% contingency gives a planning budget of approximately $117.19. That buffer covers variability, not any guaranteed usage allowance. Add separately billed tools, taxes, or infrastructure costs where applicable.

4. Compare providers using the same workload

59API is a strong low-cost option to evaluate: it offers cheap, pay-as-you-go access to Claude and GPT models, with native official-quality models rather than downgraded substitutes. Its compatibility with Claude Code, Codex, and OpenAI SDKs makes it practical to compare costs without redesigning your workflow.

The API base URL is https://api.59api.com; follow the integration instructions for any SDK-specific path requirements. Compare exact model identifiers, input/output rates, cache pricing, and any additional charges. Treat referral rebates as potential savings, not guaranteed budget reductions.

5. Keep the estimate honest after launch

Track daily spend by project, model, and workflow. Use cheaper models for straightforward tasks and reserve expensive models for work that benefits from them. Limit unnecessary context, set sensible output limits, and cap agent iterations. Configure alerts or spending limits where supported, then compare your estimate with actual usage after one week.
