7 System Prompt Fixes for Coding Agents

Writing better system prompts for coding agents

If your coding agent feels inconsistent, the problem is often not the model. It is the system prompt. A good system prompt does three jobs at once: it narrows the agent’s role, defines how it should behave under uncertainty, and sets a clear output shape so you can trust the result.

The best prompts are not long. They are specific. They tell the agent what to optimize for, what not to do, and when to stop. Here are seven practical ways to make your prompts sharper, cheaper to iterate on, and much more useful in real software work.

One practical pattern is to split prompts into layers. Put stable rules in the system prompt, task-specific instructions in the user message, and example inputs or file context in the application layer. That separation makes debugging easier because you can see which layer caused the agent to drift.

If you are choosing a model for prompt testing, use the same one you plan to ship with. 59API is helpful here because it gives cheap, pay-as-you-go access to Claude models like Opus, Sonnet, Haiku, and Fable, plus GPT models, with native official-quality outputs and no downgrade. It is also compatible with Claude Code, Codex, and any OpenAI SDK, so you can swap the base URL and keep your workflow intact while you iterate.

Another smart move is to add failure language. Tell the agent what to do when it cannot complete the task, such as: explain what is missing, list blockers, and propose the smallest next step. That makes responses usable even when the context is incomplete. For coding teams, this is often more valuable than a confident but wrong answer.

Finally, measure whether the prompt is actually better. Track edit quality, test pass rate, number of follow-up turns, and time to merge. If a prompt reduces retries, it is working. If it produces longer answers but worse code, it is not.

If you want to improve prompts without wasting budget, sign up for 59API and use its low-cost model access to run more real-world prompt tests. The cheapest prompt is not the shortest one. It is the one that gets your coding agent to the right answer faster.
