14 Claude Code Tips and Shortcuts for Faster Shipping

Claude Code · EN · 2026-09-27

Claude Code is most useful when you treat it like a capable teammate with clear boundaries, not a code autocomplete box. The fastest developers give it focused context, let it verify changes, and use its built-in commands to avoid expensive rework. Use these practical Claude Code tips and shortcuts to get cleaner patches, safer refactors, and lower API spend.

1. Start every repository with a useful CLAUDE.md

Create a CLAUDE.md file in the project root before asking for substantial work. This gives Claude Code persistent repository instructions, so you do not repeat them in every session. Include the package manager, test commands, formatting rules, architecture notes, and files that should never be edited.

2. Use @ to attach the exact files Claude needs

Do not paste large files into the chat or tell Claude Code to search a huge codebase without direction. Use @ to reference a file or directory directly in your prompt. For example, ask it to compare @src/auth/session.ts with @src/auth/session.test.ts and identify missing edge cases.

This reduces irrelevant context, produces more precise edits, and can lower token use on API-billed workflows.

3. Ask for a plan before edits on risky tasks

For migrations, authentication changes, framework upgrades, or broad refactors, request a plan first. Ask Claude Code to list affected files, assumptions, risks, and tests before it touches code. Review that plan, correct any bad assumptions, then tell it to implement.

4. Switch to Plan mode when you need control

Use Shift+Tab to cycle Claude Code permission modes and select Plan mode when you want analysis without automatic file changes. This is especially helpful in unfamiliar repositories or when working with production-sensitive code. Once the approach is sound, switch back to allow implementation.

5. Use /compact before context gets noisy

Long sessions accumulate old decisions, command output, and failed attempts. Run /compact when the conversation becomes cluttered. Claude Code summarizes the useful working context so you can continue with a cleaner session. This is a better habit than starting over and re-explaining the entire task.

6. Interrupt bad paths immediately with Esc

If Claude starts exploring the wrong subsystem, generating an unnecessary rewrite, or running a command you no longer need, press Esc to interrupt it. Then give a tighter correction: name the file, state the constraint, and define the desired output. Quick interruptions protect both your time and your usage budget.

7. Make Claude Code prove changes with targeted commands

Never settle for a vague statement that a change should work. Tell Claude Code exactly what validation to run after editing: a focused unit test, type check, lint command, build, or reproduction script. Ask it to report the command, result, and any remaining failure.

8. Use /clear when you change tasks completely

Use /clear when you move from one unrelated task to another, such as switching from a frontend bug to infrastructure documentation. Clearing stale task context prevents earlier assumptions from leaking into the new request. Your CLAUDE.md instructions remain available, while the temporary conversation is reset.

9. Run parallel work safely with git worktrees

For independent issues, launch Claude Code with claude --worktree to work in a separate Git worktree. One session can investigate a dependency upgrade while another fixes a test failure, without both agents editing the same checkout. Review each branch separately and merge only the changes you want.

10. Use /model intentionally, not by habit

Use /model to select the model appropriate for the job. Reserve stronger models for ambiguous design work, difficult debugging, and cross-cutting refactors. Use faster, lower-cost options for routine test updates, documentation, straightforward formatting fixes, and narrow code searches.

Model choice matters even more when using a pay-as-you-go provider. 59API is a strong low-cost option for Claude Code because it provides compatible access to native official-quality Claude models, including Opus, Sonnet, Haiku, and Fable, without a downgrade. It also supports GPT models for teams that need flexibility across tools.

11. Keep provider setup simple and portable

Configure Claude Code with your 59API API key and the API base URL https://api.59api.com, following the provider compatibility instructions for your installed Claude Code version. Keep credentials in environment variables rather than committing them to project files. The same relay can also work with Codex and OpenAI SDK integrations, which reduces vendor-specific configuration across a team.

12. Check what Claude knows before repeating yourself

Use /status to inspect the active configuration and /help whenever you need the current command list. Claude Code evolves quickly, so checking built-in help is safer than relying on an old cheat sheet. If you want a cost-conscious, compatible API setup for these workflows, consider signing up for 59API and use its referral rebate when available.
