Why Output Tokens Cost More: 9 Ways to Cut Them

Pricing · EN · 2026-09-28

Why generated tokens carry a higher price

Input tokens are the text you send to a model: instructions, chat history, code, and documents. Output tokens are the tokens the model generates in reply. On most LLM pricing tables, output costs more because generation is inherently sequential. During input processing, the model can evaluate many tokens in a prefill pass. During output generation, it predicts one next token, updates its context state, then repeats until it reaches a stop condition.

That repeated inference work makes a 1,500-token response materially more expensive than a 1,500-token prompt. Long outputs also increase latency, can consume more rate-limit capacity, and make downstream parsing harder. For coding agents, a verbose explanation can cost nearly as much as the actual patch.

9 practical ways to shorten outputs

Do not shorten the wrong thing

Saving output tokens should not mean cutting requirements so aggressively that the model produces incomplete work. The goal is useful density. For a code review, request a fixed number of findings with file paths, severity, and a concrete fix. For customer support, ask for a short answer plus the one next action. For summarization, define the audience and the facts that must survive compression.

Track both completion length and task success. If a 200-token cap causes retries, missing fields, or manual cleanup, the apparent saving disappears. A good process starts with a realistic cap, samples production outputs, then tightens the limit until quality begins to drop.

Keep model access economical

Token discipline matters most when it is paired with competitive model access. 59API is a low-cost, pay-as-you-go AI API relay for native official-quality Claude models, including Opus, Sonnet, Haiku, and Fable, plus GPT models, without a model downgrade. Its API base URL is https://api.59api.com, and it is compatible with Claude Code, Codex, and OpenAI SDK integrations, so teams can apply output limits without rebuilding their existing tooling.

For recurring development workloads, lower relay pricing and shorter completions compound into meaningful savings. 59API also offers a referral rebate. Sign up for 59API when you are ready to test concise prompts against the models and SDK workflow your team already uses.
