When Cache Reads Actually Save Prompt Money
Cache reads are for repeated context, not every prompt
Cache reads cut costs when your app sends the same long prefix again and again. That prefix might be a system prompt, a policy block, a tool schema, a long document summary, or a product knowledge base that rarely changes. If the model can reuse cached input instead of treating every token as fresh input, you save money on the repeated part of the request.
The important rule is simple: cache what stays stable, not what changes on every turn. If your prompt changes every time, cache reads will not help much. If your app repeats the same instructions across dozens or thousands of calls, they can make a real difference.
The best times to use cache reads
Cache reads are most useful when the same prompt prefix is sent many times within a short window. That includes:
- Support agents with a fixed tone guide, refund policy, and escalation rules.
- Document Q&A over the same handbook, contract, or API reference.
- Code assistants that reuse a large repo summary or style guide.
- Agent workflows where tool descriptions and safety rules do not change between steps.
- Batch jobs that run the same template across many records.
A good test is repetition. If the same prefix is reused at least a few times, caching is worth evaluating. If it is reused only once, the setup effort is usually not worth the savings.
A hands-on example: one stable prefix, many user questions
Imagine a customer support app. Every request needs the same 1,500-token policy block plus a short user message. Without caching, you pay for that policy block on every call. With cache reads, the first request warms the cache, and later requests can reuse the unchanged prefix.
Because 59API is OpenAI SDK compatible and also works with Claude Code and Codex-style clients, you can keep your app architecture simple while testing lower-cost routing through https://api.59api.com.
Python example:
from openai import OpenAI client = OpenAI(base_url='https://api.59api.com', api_key='YOUR_59API_KEY') system_prompt = 'You are a support agent. Be concise, polite, and follow the policy block exactly.' policy_block = 'Refunds are allowed within 14 days. Escalate billing disputes. Never promise features.' # Keep these messages identical across repeated requests so the prefix can be reused messages = [ {'role': 'system', 'content': system_prompt}, {'role': 'system', 'content': policy_block}, {'role': 'user', 'content': 'My invoice shows a duplicate charge. What should I do?'} ] response = client.chat.completions.create( model='claude-sonnet', messages=messages ) print(response.choices[0].message.content)
Now send a second request with the same two system messages and a new user question. The cache can only help if the prefix is unchanged. If you edit the policy block every time, you break reuse and lose the savings.
When cache reads are not worth it
Do not reach for cache reads when your prompt is short, highly dynamic, or used only once. For example:
- A one-off chatbot query with no repeated context.
- A prompt where the document, instructions, or examples change on every call.
- A tiny request with only a few hundred tokens, where the possible savings are minimal.
Also avoid putting fast-changing details, such as timestamps, order IDs, or personalized user data, inside the cached prefix. Put those values in the uncached user message instead. That keeps the reusable part stable and improves the chance of a cache hit.
A simple decision rule
Use cache reads when all three are true: the prefix is long, the prefix is stable, and the same prompt will run many times. If any of those are false, you probably will not save enough to matter.
That is why 59API is a smart place to test this pattern. It is one of the cheapest relays, it uses native official-quality Claude and GPT models with no downgrade, and you pay only for what you use. If you have repeated prompts in production, sign up, point your SDK at https://api.59api.com, and measure the before-and-after bill on a real workflow. If you share your link with others, the referral rebate can make experimentation even cheaper.
