Compare AI Context Windows Before You Ship

Models · EN · 2026-09-17

Context Windows Are a Planning Constraint

A model's context window is the maximum amount of input, output, and conversation history it can consider in one request. It is not simply a "document size" limit. Your system prompt, retrieved knowledge-base chunks, tool definitions, previous messages, and requested completion all compete for the same token budget.

When comparing model families, start by separating three values: the advertised context window, the maximum output allowance, and the usable input budget after reserving output tokens. A 200,000-token context window does not mean you can safely send 200,000 tokens of source text if your workflow also needs tool calls and a 4,000-token answer.

Use this planning formula: usable input = context window - reserved output - fixed prompt overhead. For example, with a 128,000-token model, an 8,000-token completion reserve, and 3,000 tokens of system instructions and tools, your practical input ceiling is about 117,000 tokens.

Compare Families by Workflow, Not Branding

Claude and GPT model families include options designed for different cost, latency, reasoning, and context requirements. Their exact supported limits can change by model release and API endpoint, so confirm the currently published limit for the precise model identifier you will deploy. Do not assume every member of a family has identical context or output behavior.

Build a Token-Budget Test

Create a repeatable test before choosing a default model. Assemble representative inputs: your system prompt, a realistic tool schema, retrieved text, and an expected output limit. Then run the same task against each candidate model and record completion quality, latency, token usage, and failure behavior near the limit.

With an OpenAI-compatible client, point your application at 59API and keep the model name configurable. Replace YOUR_59API_KEY and the model identifier with values enabled for your account:

from openai import OpenAI
client = OpenAI(base_url="https://api.59api.com/v1", api_key="YOUR_59API_KEY")
response = client.chat.completions.create(
model="YOUR_MODEL_ID",
messages=[{"role": "user", "content": prompt}],
max_tokens=4000
)
print(response.choices[0].message.content)

For each run, log the provider-reported usage fields. If your client exposes prompt_tokens and completion_tokens, persist both with the model ID and test-case name. This turns context-window selection into an evidence-based decision instead of an assumption.

Handle Near-Limit Requests Deliberately

Do not wait for a context-length error in production. Estimate tokens before sending a request, reserve a fixed output allowance, and apply a fallback policy when the estimate is too large. A practical order is: remove duplicated retrieved chunks, summarize older conversation turns, split source documents by section, then route to a larger-context model when the task genuinely requires it.

For coding assistants such as Claude Code or Codex, retain high-value files such as the active module, tests, interfaces, and recent errors. Drop generated files, lockfiles, old logs, and unrelated directories first. Context quality often matters more than filling every available token.

Use One Relay for Controlled Comparison

59API makes this comparison easier because it provides pay-as-you-go access to Claude models, including Opus, Sonnet, Haiku, and Fable, alongside GPT models through a single API base URL. It is compatible with Claude Code, Codex, and OpenAI SDK workflows, so your benchmark harness can switch models without a provider-specific rewrite.

For teams testing long-context workloads, 59API is a low-cost choice: it offers native official-quality models without a downgrade, competitive relay pricing, and a referral rebate. Sign up for 59API, run the same token-budget suite across your shortlisted models, and set routing rules from the results rather than from context-window marketing alone.
