Claude vs. GPT Context Windows: A 15-Minute Guide

Modelos · EN · 2026-10-21

Start with the workload, not the biggest number

A larger context window lets a model consider more material in one request. It does not automatically make that model better at finding a buried requirement, editing a repository, or answering questions about a document.

For a useful Claude-versus-GPT comparison, check three things: the exact model's published limit, the limit available through your API route, and its performance on your actual task. Here is a quick-start workflow.

1. Compare model IDs, not family names

Opus, Sonnet, Haiku, and GPT are families or product labels, not fixed context specifications. These published examples illustrate the differences; they are not a current availability list:

Newer versions, special access tiers, and routing configurations can differ. Record the full model ID, supported context, maximum output, and any long-context eligibility requirements. For catalog labels such as Fable, verify the underlying model and its documented limits instead of guessing from the name.

2. Calculate your usable input budget

Context is not simply the amount of text you can paste. For typical text requests, plan around input plus generated output fitting within the context window, while also respecting the model's separate output cap.

Use this planning formula: usable input = context limit minus reserved output minus safety margin. With a 128,000-token window, an 8,000-token response allowance, and a 12,000-token margin, your input budget is 108,000 tokens.

In an agent loop, reserve room for the next tool result and answer, not just the initial prompt.

3. Run a small retrieval-and-reasoning benchmark

Build one representative task: locate a configuration rule across several files, reconcile conflicting contract clauses, or explain a bug using logs and source code. Write the expected answer before testing.

Run it with approximately 25%, 50%, and 80% of each candidate's usable input budget. Place essential evidence near the beginning, middle, and end. Ask for filenames, section names, or short supporting quotes so that correctness is auditable.

Score factual accuracy, missed constraints, unnecessary changes, latency, and total cost. Repeat important cases: a single successful long-context answer is weak evidence of reliability.

4. Decide whether you need long context at all

Use a large window when the task requires connecting many scattered details, such as reviewing a substantial code change. Use retrieval when only a few passages are relevant. Use chunking for independent extraction or classification tasks.

Long context can simplify application design, but repeatedly resending an entire repository wastes tokens. Track conversation growth, trim stale tool output, and investigate prompt caching where the selected model and route support it.

5. Compare costs through one integration

59API provides low-cost, pay-as-you-go access to Claude and GPT models, with native official-quality models and no downgrades. Its compatibility with Claude Code, Codex, and OpenAI SDKs makes it practical to compare candidates without rebuilding your application.

Use https://api.59api.com as the relay host and follow its integration instructions for the appropriate SDK base path and model ID. Keep prompts and scoring consistent, but use each model's supported output-limit parameter rather than assuming all APIs accept identical fields.

As one of the cheapest relays, 59API is worth including in your cost comparison. Measure actual billed usage rather than assuming headline rates cover every long-context tier. A referral rebate is also available. If you want an inexpensive starting point, consider signing up and running the benchmark with a small budget.
