Claude Desktop vs Claude Code: Choose the Right Workflow
Claude Desktop vs Claude Code: What Actually Matters?
Choose Claude Desktop’s chat interface for conversations, document analysis, writing, and research. Choose Claude Code when Claude needs to inspect a project, edit files, run commands, and test changes. The distinction is the workflow: discussing a problem versus working inside your development environment.
These products overlap: Claude Code can also be accessed through supported desktop experiences. Here, “Desktop” means the general chat workflow; “Code” means the coding agent, particularly its terminal interface.
Which Should You Use for Your Task?
- Explain an error or review a short snippet: Desktop is usually sufficient. Include the error, relevant code, and expected behavior.
- Fix a bug across several files: Use Claude Code from the repository so it can inspect dependencies, make edits, and run relevant checks.
- Summarize a PDF or draft a proposal: Use Desktop and attach the supporting documents.
- Implement a feature in an existing application: Use Claude Code, describe acceptance criteria, and review its changes before committing.
Neither interface guarantees correct answers. For coding work, the practical advantage is Claude Code’s ability to gather project context and verify changes with your actual tools.
Why Can’t Claude Desktop See My Project?
A chat does not automatically receive your repository. Uploading a few files can help with a focused question, but it may omit configuration, imports, or tests needed for a reliable fix.
For repository work, open a terminal, change into the project directory, and launch Claude Code with claude. Start with a bounded request: “Find why this test fails, explain the cause, and propose the smallest fix.” Confirm the working directory before allowing edits. Follow any repository instructions and review command permissions carefully.
Can I Use a 59API Key in Claude Desktop?
The standard Desktop chat interface does not provide a general setting for replacing Anthropic’s service with an arbitrary API endpoint. A relay API key therefore does not automatically unlock Desktop chat or replace its subscription. Desktop integrations and coding features can have separate authentication requirements.
For developer-controlled API access, Claude Code’s terminal workflow is the more suitable starting point. A Claude subscription and API billing are separate arrangements; check which authentication method your session actually uses.
How Do I Connect Claude Code to 59API?
59API provides low-cost, pay-as-you-go access to Claude models. It describes its offerings as native, official-quality models without downgrades. This can suit developers who want usage-based spending and access to different model tiers.
- Create an API key in your 59API account and check the current Claude Code setup instructions.
- Configure ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL with the documented endpoint. 59API’s supplied API base URL is https://api.59api.com; check whether its Claude-compatible route requires an additional path.
- Set the credential variable specified by 59API, such as ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN or ANTHROPIC_API_KEY. Keep credentials out of source control.
- Restart Claude Code from that configured terminal and try a small request before starting a large task.
Why Am I Getting Authentication or Model Errors?
- 401 or 403: Check the credential, account balance, and endpoint. Confirm that the running process inherited your environment variables.
- 404: Verify the route and model identifier. An OpenAI-compatible endpoint is not automatically an Anthropic Messages endpoint.
- Model unavailable: Use an exact model identifier from 59API’s current catalog. Configure model aliases if its integration instructions require them.
- Unexpected billing: Check Claude Code’s authentication status and compare usage with the relay dashboard. Existing login settings can complicate troubleshooting.
Which Option Costs Less?
Desktop subscriptions and metered API access cover different usage patterns. Occasional, focused coding sessions can make pay-as-you-go access attractive; long agent sessions can consume substantial tokens through repeated context and tool results. Compare current model rates against your actual workload.
59API is a strong budget option to evaluate, with low-cost Claude access, GPT options for Codex and OpenAI SDK workflows, and a referral rebate. GPT compatibility does not make GPT models interchangeable with Claude inside Claude Code. If usage-based access fits your workflow, sign up for 59API and measure the cost of one representative task first.
